HAVE YOU TAKEN ZOLOFT OR OTHER SSRIs WHILE PREGNANT?
Recent clinical studies have linked numerous antidepressant medications such as Zoloft to child birth defects and other complications if taken by women who are pregnant. Women who take Zoloft or other antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) at any point during pregnancy are at an increased risk of giving birth to a child with serious congenital heart deformities or other complications at birth including the following:

  • Heart Defects
  • Club Foot
  • Lung Defects
  • Spina Bifida
  • Cleft Lip
  • Genital Deformation
  • Cleft Palate
  • Skull Defects

Zoloft, also available as the generic drug sertraline, is listed as a Pregnancy Category C medication by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is approved for the treatment of clinical depression and certain anxiety disorders. Unfortunately, it has been discovered that taking Zoloft during pregnancy can increase the risk of certain birth defects, especially if the medication is taken during the third trimester, yet women may have been unaware of the risks associated with Zoloft treatment. Children whose mothers take Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, or similar antidepressants during pregnancy are twice as likely as other children to have a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder, according to a small new study.

WHY DO YOU AND YOUR CHILD HAVE A CLAIM FOR BIRTH DEFECTS CAUSED BY ZOLOFT AND OTHER SSRIs?

The drug companies have a duty to disclose known risks as well as risks they should know about. Risks a drug company should know about include risks that could be revealed by conducting adequate testing and safety surveillance. Despite scientific studies that show Zoloft increases the risks of birth defects, the manufacturer of Zoloft ( Pfizer) has failed to warn patients of this danger. In fact, the 2011 Zoloft label does not include information about an increased risk of birth defects.
